Come SPRING Clean : Essential Tools for Spring Cleaning

Essential Tools for Spring Cleaning - Clean Mama

I love getting ready for spring cleaning.  Gathering supplies and gearing up for a cleaning endeavor is definitely more fun than the cleaning itself, right?  I find that it’s most effective to gather from tools I already have and then assess the situation and see if I need to get anything else.  This ensures that I am ready to do a little bit of cleaning every day or for a few days in a row, and stay on track with spring cleaning. Want to give it a whirl too?

Here’s what you need to do:

Spring Cleaning Essentials in a Cleaning Caddy - Clean Mama

Grab a container, a basket, or a caddy and collect the tools you’ll need for spring cleaning.  You can carry this from room to room with you or keep it in a mudroom or storage closet and just take out what’s needed each day.  This year I’m especially excited to spring clean because I have my very own products (Clean Mama Home) and not only do I love using them (because cute cleaning definitely makes cleaning more fun), but they work better than anything I’ve used before!  Yay 🙂

Essential Tools for Spring Cleaning - details - Clean Mama

I’m keeping the cleaning supply list SIMPLE this year, less is more and when you have multi-purpose products, it’s just plain easier to get that cleaning done.

Spring Cleaning Tools:

  • cleaning caddy
  • microfiber cleaning cloths
  • bar mops or cotton cleaning cloths
  • duster
  • vacuum cleaner with attachments
  • mop
  • carpet cleaner (optional)
  • blind cleaner
  • scrub brushes – large and small (or an old toothbrush)
  • window squeegee
  • lint roller
  • garbage bags

Spring Cleaning Products – use your favorites or DIY them (I’ll be sharing my recipes this week):

  • dish or castile soap
  • all-purpose cleaning spray
  • window spray

I was looking for a little revamp in the organization of my DIY cleaners ingredient storage and came up with something that I thought you might like too. I’m doing a little organizing before officially starting my spring cleaning (get your Come Spring Clean Challenge checklist here).  You’ll notice that the first item on the checklist is to clean up/declutter cleaning supply storage.  I’ve re-organized my cleaning closet (it’ll be on the blog soon) but a fun mini-projects was to transfer cleaning powders into large canning jars.  Doing this freed up space and made the ingredients more easily accessible for me.  Each of the boxes and bags were half-empty and taking up a lot of space, so it was the perfect time for this project.

Labels on Mason Jars - Clean Mama

Here’s what you need:

  • jars – I used 1 quart Ball canning jars in aqua
  • labels – I used chalkboard labels and a chalkboard marker and trimmed them to fit
  • dry ingredients – I use these regularly – baking soda, epsom salt, washing soda, Borax
  • funnel (not necessary, but might be helpful)

This is such a simple and fun little project – it doesn’t really need instructions, but here’s what I did:

Transfer Ingredients into Jars - Clean Mama

Make sure the containers are clean and dry.  Transfer powder into container.

Label Supplies - Clean Mama

Cut chalkboard label to fit lid and label with a chalkboard marker.  You could also use a hang tag, washi tape, or a label maker.

DIY Ingredient Storage - Clean Mama

Put in a safe place, out of reach of children and pets.

Clean Your Bedrooms In One Week - Clean Mama

This month I’m doing a Come Clean Challenge to jump start the 2016 cleaning calendar theme – Come Clean in 2016.  Each week this month we’ve been doing simple, daily tasks – and this is our LAST week of the challenge.  I hope that you’re finding that your house is cleaner and more organized than it was at the beginning of the challenge.

As you’re doing the challenge, I’ve designed it to work WITH my cleaning routine.  For instance, when you’re vacuuming on Wednesday (vacuuming day), you’ll see that clean and wash baseboards is the task for the day.  Make the challenge work for you and your schedule but don’t get discouraged by what you can’t accomplish, concentrate on what you can get done in short chunks of time.

Make Your Bed Every Day via Clean Mama

Not sure how to incorporate deep cleaning your bedrooms AND keep up with other household tasks?  Here’s what I do….

Start with the daily tasks and make sure those get completed – wipe counters, check floors, one load of laundry, clutter THEN when those are completed or started, I do the weekly tasks – Monday is bathrooms day (follow my speed clean plan to get started), Tuesday is dusting day, etc.  I work QUICKLY and get the task finished up in about 15 minutes.  This week I’ll be working on bedrooms as I can and with the weekly tasks incorporated as much as possible.  Think of ways to maximize your time and effort by adding another task or two to what you’re already working on.

Little Boy's Bedroom - Clean Mama

On the checklist for this week and a little bit of direction:

  • THOROUGH DUSTING OF ALL SURFACES, LAMPS, AND LIGHT FIXTURES – Do a quick dust of any light fixtures.  I use this duster and/or my soft bristle vacuum cleaner attachment.  If you have glass light fixtures and they are really dusty (and you have time) you can remove them and wash in your kitchen sink with warm soapy water.  A lint roller works great for getting the dust off lamp shades.
  • CLEAN AND VACUUM UNDER BEDS – While dusting (Tuesday is dusting day) incorporate checking under the beds, cleaning out anything unnecessary and vacuuming under the beds if you are able.
  • VACUUM/WASH BASEBOARDS – After vacuuming (vacuuming day) take the time to use the hose attachment on your vacuum cleaner to get the edges, corners, and baseboards.  Then wash your baseboards thoroughly.  If you have little ones that want to help, baby wipes work great for this task.
  • CATCH UP ON LAUNDRY/PURGE LAUNDRY – If you’ve fallen behind on laundry this week, take some time today to get caught up.  While you’re folding clothes, put anything that no longer fits correctly or has seen better days in a toss or donate basket and take it to your favorite donation center or toss it.
  • WASH PILLOWS – Get your bedding in tip top shape this week by washing any bed pillows that are launder-able.  Check out this tutorial to get them in like new condition in no time.
  • CATCH UP ON ANY UNCOMPLETED TASKS – Did you run out of time or energy to complete tasks during the week?  Catch up on this day!
  • FINAL SWEEP THROUGH HOME – QUICK CLEAN – Get ready for the week ahead by making sure surfaces remain cleaned off and everything is tidied up.  Relax and enjoy the new habits you’ve formed and the tidy home you’ve achieved this month!

Clean Your Bathrooms In One Week - Clean Mama

(The adorable aqua blue microfiber cloth above is from my Clean Mama HOME shop and is currently sold out but will be back in stock in the next week or two!)

This month I’m doing a Come Clean Challenge to jump start the 2016 cleaning calendar theme – Come Clean in 2016.  Each week this month I’ll have simple, medicine daily tasks to work on – don’t worry about getting everything done, work on a little something every day and your bathrooms will be cleaner than they were at the beginning of the week. For instance, when you’re vacuuming on Wednesday (vacuuming day), you’ll wash floors and baseboards is the task for the day.  Adding this step on Wednesday will make Thursday’s tasks a little easier.  Make the challenge work for you and your schedule but don’t get discouraged by what you can’t accomplish, concentrate on what you can get done in short chunks of time.

Not sure how to incorporate deep cleaning your bathrooms AND keep up with other household tasks?  Here’s what I do….

Start with the daily tasks and make sure those get completed – wipe counters, check floors, one load of laundry, clutter THEN when those are completed or started, I do the weekly tasks – Monday is bathrooms day (follow my speed clean plan to get started), Tuesday is dusting day, etc.  I work QUICKLY and get the task finished up in about 15 minutes.  This week I’ll be working on bathrooms as I can and with the weekly tasks incorporated as much as possible.  Think of ways to maximize your time and effort by adding another task or two to what you’re already working on.

  • DUST LIGHT FIXTURES – Do a quick dust of any light fixtures.  I use this duster and/or my soft bristle vacuum cleaner attachment.  If you have glass light fixtures and they are really dusty (and you have time) you can remove them and wash in your kitchen sink with warm soapy water.
  • VACUUM FLOORS, BASEBOARDS, VENTS – While dusting (Tuesday is dusting day) incorporate dusting any edges, corners, and vents.  Use a dusting wand, a duster, and/or your vacuum cleaner to make this simple and easy.
  • WASH FLOORS AND BASEBOARDS – After vacuuming (vacuuming day) take the time to use the hose attachment on your vacuum cleaner to get the edges, corners, and baseboards.  Then wash your floors and baseboards thoroughly.
  • EMPTY AND CLEAN AT LEAST ONE CUPBOARD AND DRAWER – Start under the bathroom sink and completely empty it.  Toss any expired products
  • TOWEL INVENTORY AND STORAGE – Today’s the day to evaluate your bathroom towel situation.  Do you have too many towels?  Are there raggedy ones that could be replaced?  January is a great time to buy new towels because of all the white sales 🙂  Donate any unneeded towels to your favorite donation spot or local animal shelter.
  • CATCH UP ON ANY UNCOMPLETED TASKS – Did you run out of time or energy to complete tasks during the week?  Catch up on this day!
  • QUICK DECLUTTER OF ALL SURFACES – Get ready for the week ahead by making sure surfaces remain cleaned off and everything is tidied up.  Bathroom counters can become clutter magnets – declutter again ahead of a busy week.

Clean Your Living Spaces in One Week - Clean Mama

This month I’m doing a Come Clean Challenge to jump start the 2016 cleaning calendar theme – Come Clean in 2016.  Each week this month I’ll have simple, link daily tasks to work on – don’t worry about getting everything done, work on a little something every day and your living spaces will be cleaner than it was at the beginning of the week. Clean Living Spaces via Clean Mama

On the checklist for this week and a little bit of direction:

  • CLEAR ALL FLAT SURFACES – Make a quick run through your living spaces and clear all flat surfaces – remove any clutter, unnecessary items, and things that just don’t belong.  Take 15-30 minutes to evaluate what you love and want to keep and what you don’t need to keep around any longer.  Keeping surfaces clutter-free will give your home room to breathe and it makes dusting a breeze.
  • DUST CORNERS, VENTS, AND LIGHT FIXTURES  – While dusting (dusting day) incorporate dusting any edges, corners, and light fixtures.  Use a dusting wand, a duster, and/or your vacuum cleaner to make this simple and easy.  If you have glass light fixtures and they are really dusty (and you have time) you can remove them and wash in your kitchen sink with warm soapy water.
  • DEEP VACUUM – VACUUM EDGES + UNDER FURNITURE – While vacuuming (vacuuming day) take the time to use the hose attachment on your vacuum cleaner to get the edges, corners, and baseboards.  Pull out furniture if you’re able and if needed and vacuum underneath it.
  • DECLUTTER AND CLEAN STORAGE AREAS + TOYS – If you have storage in your living spaces, declutter it today.  Clear it out, clean it and only put back what you love and use.  If you have toys stored in living spaces, clear, clean and declutter it!
  • CLEAN WINDOWS AND MIRRORS – Notice smudges, fingerprints and/or dusty mirrors?  Us a microfiber cloth and give them a little spritz and keep moving.
  • CATCH UP ON ANY UNCOMPLETED TASKS – Did you run out of time or energy to complete tasks during the week?  Catch up on this day!
  • CLEAR SURFACES AND QUICK CLEAN – Get ready for the week ahead by making sure surfaces remain cleaned off and everything is tidied up.  Living spaces take a beating – have them ready for the week and chances are they’ll stay that way as the next week moves in.

Come Clean Challenge – Week 1 – Kitchen

Clean Your Kitchen in a Week and Keep the Rest of the House Tidy at the Same Time - Clean Mama

This month I’m doing a Come Clean Challenge to jump start the 2016 cleaning calendar theme – Come Clean in 2016.  Each week this month I’ll have simple, and daily tasks to work on – don’t worry about getting everything done, try work on a little something every day and your kitchen will be cleaner than it was at the beginning of the week. For instance, for small appliances, you can just clean your coffee maker or if you have more time, tackle all of your small appliances.  Make the challenge work for you and your schedule but don’t get discouraged by what you can’t accomplish, concentrate on what you can get done in short chunks of time.

Not sure how to incorporate cleaning the kitchen AND keeping up with other household tasks?  Here’s what I do….

Start with the daily tasks and make sure those get completed – wipe counters, check floors, one load of laundry, clutter THEN when those are completed or started, I do the weekly tasks – Monday is bathrooms day, Tuesday is dusting day, etc.  I work QUICKLY and get the task finished up in about 15 minutes.  This week I’ll be working in the kitchen during meal prep times – so while I’m prepping lunches or cooking dinner I’ll probably be clearing the counters, cleaning a small appliance or two, and cleaning out the refrigerator. Think of ways to maximize your time in the kitchen by adding another task or two to what you’re already working on.  This simplifies cleaning the kitchen and makes that time I already am spending in the kitchen more worthwhile.

On the checklist for this week and a little bit of direction:

  • Clear and Clean Kitchen Counters – start by completely clearing the counters.  Put everything on your kitchen table, wipe the counters with your favorite cleaner and put only the things that you use at least weekly back on the counters.
  • Clean Small Appliances – wipe down your small appliances.  If you have time to clean them more extensively, take the time to do it!
  • Purge and Clean Refrigerator and Freezer – empty the refrigerator, wipe it clean and put the food back.  Repeat the same process with your freezer.
  • Clean Oven – use your self-cleaning option and/or look below for how I clean my oven with natural ingredients.
  • Clear and Clean Pantry – empty your pantry or food storage cupboard and get rid of any expired items.  If you have extra pantry items that you don’t know if you’ll use (and they haven’t expired) donate them to your local food pantry.
  • Drawers and Cupboards – choose one or two drawer or cupboards (or more) and completely empty, get rid of unused items, wipe clean and return items.
  • Catch Up on any Uncompleted Tasks – Run out of time or energy to complete tasks during the week?  Catch up on this day!

Come Clean Challenge Quick Start

What’s the BEST way to start a challenge?  Make some headway quickly so you’re motivated to continue.  If you’re plodding along with no obvious progress, frustration creeps in and you’ll most likely get frustrated and give up.  The Come Clean CHALLENGE is the perfect combination of let’s make some progress and the acknowledgement that life happens and no one’s perfect.  Enter the QUICK START – basically 3 days to make a lot of progress in a short period of time so you feel like continuing.

Come Clean Challenge - Quick Start

Ready?  Here’s what we’re going to do:

  • For 3 days – January 1-3 – declutter as much as you are able to in your home.  This could be taking down and putting away Christmas decorations, it could be going through kids toys, or maybe your clothing.
  • Don’t worry about how much or how little time you have to devote to these 3 days.  If you can spend at least 15 minutes a day decluttering SOMETHING you’re farther along than you were the day before.  If you’re feeling motivated to do more or maybe you’re off work and want to clean out that closet you’ve been eyeing for the last year, now’s your chance!
  • Grab some garbage bags or baskets to put your decluttered items into – have a plan for what you find otherwise you’ll simply be putting it back.
  • Set up these categories for what you find: Toss/Keep/Sell/Donate
  • Set your timer for 15-30 minutes and move quickly through your home, finding things to declutter.  The most important thing for me is to get the items OUT of the house quickly.  Put the bags in the garage or better yet, straight to your car and out the door to your favorite donation center.
  • Come back here on Monday, January 4th, ready to start cleaning the kitchen!
