How to Make Washing Soda

How to Turn Baking Soda Into Washing Soda with One Ingredient and One Hour - Clean Mama

Have you heard of washing soda or super washing soda?  It’s a common ingredient in DIY cleaners and sold under the Arm & Hammer brand name.  It’s a laundry and detergent booster, odor and stain remover. Washing soda is great ingredient to have in your repertoire.

Super Washing Soda

All it is composed of is sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and water – that’s it!  PLEASE NOTE:  You DO NOT need water for this recipe, the baking soda already has the ‘ingredients’ necessary for the recipe – it just needs to be heated to change into washing soda.  If you can’t find washing soda (it’s readily available in the US but not worldwide) or just want to try a little science experiment in your home, keep reading!

Gather Your Supplies - Clean Mama

Here’s what you need to make your own washing soda:

  • rimmed baking sheet or baking dish
  • oven pre-heated to 425 degrees
  • 2-3 cups of baking soda

Put Baking Soda in Dish - Clean Mama

Place the baking soda on your baking sheet or dish and then in a 425 degree oven.  Stir 3-4 times in the hour.  At the one hour mark, check the consistency of the baking/washing soda.  If the consistency hasn’t changed, continue baking and check every 5 minutes until it shows a change in the consistency.

Place in 425 degree oven for 1 hour - Clean Mama

Once it has been transformed, it will have a different texture, look, and feel.  When you see that that has happened, you have washing soda!

The Difference Between Baking and Washing Soda - Clean Mama

Have you ever made your own washing soda?  You can use washing soda in homemade laundry soap, as an additive with your favorite detergent (use 1/4-1/2 cup per load to boost performance and up to 1 cup for heavily soiled laundry), and in a soft cleaning paste to name a few cleaning ideas.

Washing Windows – 2 Ways to DIY

Washing Windows - Two Ways to DIY - Clean Mama

Window washing and spring cleaning go together, don’t you think?  If you’ve ever spent a good part of a day (or more) washing windows, you know that it can be a tedious task.  If you’re looking for a better (quicker and easier) way to accomplish a house full of clean windows, I have 2 methods to share with you today.

The first method is great for small windows or a couple windows at a time.  This recipe is one I’ve shared before here on the blog (and it’s in my book) – it’s seriously the best recipe for cleaning glass and mirrors that I’ve ever mixed up.  It works because it harnesses the power of vinegar for cleaning and the rubbing alcohol works to help the solution dry quickly and streak -free.

Spray with Cleaner - Clean Mama

Window + Mirror Cleaning Spray

  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons rubbing alcohol
  • 3 drops peppermint essential oil

Mix in a spray bottle (I recommend using glass spray bottles), spray liberally on surface and wipe clean with a window + mirror cleaning cloth.

Window + Mirror Cleaning Spray - Clean Mama

My favorite way to wash windows?  I do them as quickly as possible and this method is how….

Heavy Duty Window Washing Solution

  • 4 tablespoons castile soap (or your favorite dish soap)
  • 4 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol
  • about 1/2 gallon of warm water

Start with a large flat container and put in 4 tablespoons of castile soap (or your favorite dish soap) and 4 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol.  Fill the container with about 1/2 gallon of warm water and bring the container over to your windows.  Place the container on a large bath towel or two in case there are any drips or spills.

Big Batch Window Cleaner - Clean Mama

In order to wash windows this way, you need a squeegee.  I’m using this one, it’s extendable and has a washable microfiber scrubbing pad.  Here’s a similar one – but you need a pole with it if you have tall windows.

Washing Windows with a Squeegee - Clean Mama

Dip your squeegee in the window washing solution, press the excess water out, and apply the pad to your window (do one window at a time).  Once you have scrubbed your window, work left to right and top to bottom with the rubber side of your squeegee.  Wipe off any excess water on the squeegee as you’re working.  Use a microfiber cloth to wipe up any streaks and drips on your windows.  Bonus: a microfiber cloth will keep your windows streak and lint-free.

Wipe Up Drips with a Microfiber Cloth - Clean Mama

If your windows are dirty (like mine were) you’ll see dirty water drips on your window sills.  Tackle two cleaning tasks at the same time and take a minute to wipe up each window sill as you go.

Have you tackled any windows yet?  I hope this post gives you a little bit of motivation and direction for washing windows this spring (and beyond).

How to Clean Your Own Carpets

How to Clean Your Own Carpets - Clean Mama

Carpet cleaning and spring cleaning go hand in hand for me.  Carpet cleaning companies recommend cleaning carpets twice a year and/or at least once a year.  This is a great recommendation but it can be expensive and a hassle to move furniture and stay off the carpet for hours while it dries.  I do recommend getting carpets professionally cleaned when necessary and do so every year or two in our own home but I love being able to clean individual rooms, hallways, and stairs as needed myself and especially in the spring.

How to Clean Your Carpets - Clean Mama

In order to clean your own carpets, you’ll need a carpet cleaning machine.  I recommend purchasing one so you have it on hand, but you can also rent them inexpensively at grocery and hardware stores. This is the one (affiliate link) that I wholeheartedly recommend and use in my home.  I love that it has a low profile for cleaning under furniture and that it has two cleaning modes – Deep Clean Mode and Express Clean Mode for quick clean-ups.  It also maneuvers like a vacuum cleaner, not a bulky carpet cleaner.

ProHeat 2X® Revolution™ Pet Upright Carpet Cleaner | 1548

How to Clean Your Own Carpets

Start in the farthest Corner - Clean Mama

  1. Move any furniture that you can.
  2. Make sure small items are off the floors.
  3. Do a quick vacuum of the room.
  4. Fill up the machine with warm water and the carpet cleaner solution that your machine recommends.
  5. Spot treat any stains.
  6. Start at the farthest corner in the room.
  7. Follow the directions for your machine on how to operate it.
  8. Slowly move the carpet cleaner parallel to the walls so you get those carpet lines.
  9. Go over the carpet with the machine to lift up any additional moisture.
  10. Empty the tank (yuck!), rinse thoroughly, and allow to dry completely before putting the machine back together.
  11. Allow to dry thoroughly.
  12. Vacuum the carpet to pick up any lint or debris that the carpet cleaner unearthed.
  13. Enjoy your clean carpet!

Empty the Water Tank - Clean Mama

Bissell sent me the ProHeat 2X Revolution to try out.  I have been using an older model of the Bissell ProHeat for over 5 years and was excited to try out the new features and improved drying time with the new model.  Let me tell you, it’s amazing and a perfect tool to add to your cleaning repertoire!

Most carpet cleaners require that you use their brand of cleaning solution to keep the warranty in tact.  I always recommend that BUT if you are looking for a great natural alternative that works amazingly well, try BioKleen’s Carpet & Rug Shampoo.

Tell me – do you clean your own carpets?

DIY Cleaners : Soft Cleaning Paste

Soft Cleaning Paste - the perfect scrub - Clean Mama

I’ve been sharing my favorite DIY Cleaners for spring cleaning this week and I just LOVE this soft cleaning paste.  It is perfect for bathrooms, tubs, tile, faucets….anywhere you need a little paste to get rid of soap scum, water spots, and just plain old dirt.

PLEASE NOTE : If you want to store this recipe (that’s what I do) make sure that you are mixing it up a little on the drier/ not liquid-y side.  If it’s too runny, it will expand inside the container when it’s drying.

Soft Cleaning Paste -ingredients - Clean Mama

SOFT CLEANING PASTE

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup washing soda
  • 1 teaspoon citric acid (preservative)
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 tablespoons castile soap or dish soap
  • 10- 20 drops essential oils ( I use lemon and peppermint)
  • 1/2-3/4 cup white vinegar (depending on desired consistency – do not go over 3/4 cup)

Soft Cleaning Paste - mix into a paste - Clean Mama

Combine dry ingredients in a bowl.  Add soap and essential oils and carefully add 1/2 cup of white vinegar (it will bubble a bit).  Mix thoroughly and add up to 1/4 cup more vinegar if you want more of a sauce than a paste.  Store in a sealed container – it should last at least a month in a cool dark place.  Scoop out a tablespoon or two and apply with a sponge or a scrub brush and scrub away.  Rinse thoroughly.

DIY Cleaners : All-Purpose Spray

All-Purpose Spray - Clean Just About Anywhere Spary - Clean Mama

This week I’ll be sharing my 3 favorite DIY recipes for spring cleaning.  It’s spring cleaning season and you need a go-to all-purpose spray to clean all those spots on your checklist.  I promise you this All-Purpose Spray recipe is the perfect clean just-about-anywhere spray.  Want the kids to help?  Hand them a bottle of this.  Not to be used on marble or granite (because of the white vinegar).

All-Purpose Spray Ingredients - Clean Mama

  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 10 drops of your favorite essential oil (lemon and clove is my favorite blend)

Use a Funnel to Pour Ingredients into Spray Bottle - Clean Mama

Mix in a spray bottle, spray liberally on surfaces and wipe clean with a soft cleaning cloth (I prefer microfiber).

Come SPRING Clean : Essential Tools for Spring Cleaning

Essential Tools for Spring Cleaning - Clean Mama

I love getting ready for spring cleaning.  Gathering supplies and gearing up for a cleaning endeavor is definitely more fun than the cleaning itself, right?  I find that it’s most effective to gather from tools I already have and then assess the situation and see if I need to get anything else.  This ensures that I am ready to do a little bit of cleaning every day or for a few days in a row, and stay on track with spring cleaning. Want to give it a whirl too?

Here’s what you need to do:

Spring Cleaning Essentials in a Cleaning Caddy - Clean Mama

Grab a container, a basket, or a caddy and collect the tools you’ll need for spring cleaning.  You can carry this from room to room with you or keep it in a mudroom or storage closet and just take out what’s needed each day.  This year I’m especially excited to spring clean because I have my very own products (Clean Mama Home) and not only do I love using them (because cute cleaning definitely makes cleaning more fun), but they work better than anything I’ve used before!  Yay 🙂

Essential Tools for Spring Cleaning - details - Clean Mama

I’m keeping the cleaning supply list SIMPLE this year, less is more and when you have multi-purpose products, it’s just plain easier to get that cleaning done.

Spring Cleaning Tools:

  • cleaning caddy
  • microfiber cleaning cloths
  • bar mops or cotton cleaning cloths
  • duster
  • vacuum cleaner with attachments
  • mop
  • carpet cleaner (optional)
  • blind cleaner
  • scrub brushes – large and small (or an old toothbrush)
  • window squeegee
  • lint roller
  • garbage bags

Spring Cleaning Products – use your favorites or DIY them (I’ll be sharing my recipes this week):

DIY Cleaners Ingredient Storage

DIY Cleaners Ingredient Storage - Clean Mama

I was looking for a little revamp in the organization of my DIY cleaners ingredient storage and came up with something that I thought you might like too. I’m doing a little organizing before officially starting my spring cleaning (get your Come Spring Clean Challenge checklist here).  You’ll notice that the first item on the checklist is to clean up/declutter cleaning supply storage.  I’ve re-organized my cleaning closet (it’ll be on the blog soon) but a fun mini-projects was to transfer cleaning powders into large canning jars.  Doing this freed up space and made the ingredients more easily accessible for me.  Each of the boxes and bags were half-empty and taking up a lot of space, so it was the perfect time for this project.

Labels on Mason Jars - Clean Mama

Here’s what you need:

  • jars – I used 1 quart Ball canning jars in aqua
  • labels – I used chalkboard labels and a chalkboard marker and trimmed them to fit
  • dry ingredients – I use these regularly – baking soda, epsom salt, washing soda, Borax
  • funnel (not necessary, but might be helpful)

This is such a simple and fun little project – it doesn’t really need instructions, but here’s what I did:

Transfer Ingredients into Jars - Clean Mama

Make sure the containers are clean and dry.  Transfer powder into container.

Label Supplies - Clean Mama

Cut chalkboard label to fit lid and label with a chalkboard marker.  You could also use a hang tag, washi tape, or a label maker.

DIY Ingredient Storage - Clean Mama

Put in a safe place, out of reach of children and pets.
