I love being at home. Relaxed, rejuvenated, and ready for the day. This is part of the reason I love my homekeeping routine. It helps me keep the home clean and tidy with plenty of time to enjoy family and home activities that we love. For me, if I don’t have a little order around me, that feeling of comfort and cozy isn’t there and the love for our home feels more like resentment. I was able to read and endorse my friend Melissa from The Inspired Room’s newest book, Dwelling, a couple months ago and I just love how she articulates health and home right alongside comfort and belonging. I feel like I can definitely speak to ‘how to be a homebody’ and while it isn’t something I have really talked about much on the blog, I thought it would be fun to share a couple simple things I do every day that make being a homebody enjoyable and guilt-free. If you aren’t a homebody, that’s FINE, I bet you’ll find something to take away and at the very least, enter the giveaway at the bottom of the post.
HOW TO BE A HOMEBODY
(Even if you work 60 hours a week outside of the home, you can still be a homebody – the key is finding YOUR rhythm and routine and loving the time that you ARE home.)
Have a daily routine. If you are already a homebody you might have a morning, noon, and nighttime routine, but the key to loving being home is seeing the rhythm in the day and going with it. Make your bed, clean up the kitchen after breakfast, unload the dishwasher while your coffee is brewing….Find your routine and go all in on it.
Have a cleaning routine. The key to a consistently clean home is a cleaning routine – if you don’t have one yet, try mine – it’s simple, takes minutes a day and can be done in all stages and phases of life.
Make a bed, scrub a sink. Take care of your home intentionally and do little things to keep it clean and tidy. If you aren’t used to a routine, start by making your bed and scrubbing your kitchen sink at night.
Learn the art of puttering. This is an old-school phrase but I love it. Puttering is what you can do when you have free time and can walk around fluffing pillows, tidying up, watering plants, moving things around. It’s quiet and soulful and can be done in as much time as you want to devote to it.
Find a hobby. Something special that you do for yourself or with your family that you enjoy….gardening, puzzles, reading, knitting, needlework, painting, watching movies, baking or cooking, exercising…
Be deliberate with your time at home. Don’t get caught in the things that suck your time and leave you empty – social media, endless tv, complaining, worrying… Set timers for yourself and block out time for things that you enjoy.
