Essential Oil Combinations for the Home

If you’ve ever made a DIY cleaner, chances are you’ve added an essential oil or two to the mix.  I primarily use essential oils for cleaning and diffusing but there are oodles of other uses for them as well – but today we’re just talking about SCENT.  If you’re looking to branch out past lemon essential oil and customize the scent for your diffuser or cleaners, I have some favorite scent combinations for you.  Don’t be afraid to experiment and see what you come up with.

Lemon + Clove – my absolute favorite scent combination and signature scent – it’s homey, warm and inviting.
Lemon + Peppermint + Lavender – this is a great combo – clean and refreshing. I like it heavy on the lemon and lavender with just a drop or two of peppermint.
Eucalyptus + Lavender – if you like the smell of a spa, this is probably the combination they’re diffusing.
Melaleuca + Lemon + Orange – Melaleuca (or tea tree oil) is a natural disinfectant but has a strong scent.  I like to offset the scent with a little citrus to freshen it up a bit.
Lemon + Cypress – I love this combination for washing hardwood floors.  The woodsy scent of the cypress and lemon are a great combination.
Rosemary + Clove + Orange – If you’re looking for the perfect kitchen scent, this is it.  The herbal rosemary pairs really well with the clove and orange.
Cinnamon + Melaleuca – Cinnamon is a spicy scent that does a great job at toning down the melaleuca.

The rule of thumb for scenting DIY cleaners is 3-10 drops essential oil per 16 ounces of liquid (usually water and/or white vinegar).  Here are a couple recipes to get you started with – simply substitute your scent combo for mine:

Laminate Floor Cleaner
Fabric Sanitizer Spray
Non-Vinegar Hardwood Floor Cleaner
Vinegar Hardwood Floor Cleaner
Window + Mirror Cleaning Spray
Marble + Granite Cleaning Spray
All-Purpose Disinfecting Cleaner
All Purpose Spray
Laundry – soften + freshen

I use doTERRA essential oils but also recommend NOW and Plant Therapy.

Always use caution around pets and children when using essential oils.

  1. I love lemon and lavender, but I’ve never added peppermint in – might have a go and change it up. Thank you!

    – Natalie

  2. DEBRA STANTON says:

I am looking for the Lemon, Clove and Lavender oils. But when I go to the Miracle essential oil website, all I find is “Sleep, Slender, Energy, Digest, Immunity etc.

    • Click through the links I shared – I haven’t used the Miracle oils – or look for single oils so you aren’t getting a blend.

  3. Just wondering if you’ve ever tried anything with basil? I love the Mrs. Meyers brand, but wish to make my own with that scent.

  4. The oils do a good job of masking the vinegar smell?

  5. Elizabeth says:

Hi Becky, after finding your blog last week I have been highly motivated to clean more naturally and more often, HA! I have never used essential oils before and would like to make our own cleaners. Do essential oils go a long way per bottle? They seem so expensive on the DoTerra website that I’m hesitant to purchase some. Thank you (and my husband thanks you too :))!

    • Hi Elizabeth – Essential oils are extremely concentrated. Another brand that I recommend and use is Plant Therapy 🙂

  6. Hi Becky…what are your favorite oils to diffuse during the holidays. Thanks!
