Quick Tip: Organizing Cords in the Office

Office Cord Storage via Clean Mama

I’ve been re-working my office over the past month to simplify and make it more efficient.  Before I do a “big reveal” of the whole space, I’ll be sharing a couple helpful cleaning and organizing tips with you in the space.  Today I have a quick tip that involves cord storage.  Aren’t cords annoying?  They get all tangled and bunched up and they just scream clutter.  I love this simple solution to keep the cords and components out of sight…

Use a basket with handles to hide cords and components via Clean Mama

I purchased a new desk with an open front knowing that part of this space would be where I’d house the computer modem and wifi system.  So instead of being jammed behind the desk, the cords and gear are all neatly tucked away in a basket (it’s this one from Target).  Something you might want to consider if you want to do a little cord storage like this, is to find a basket or bin with cut out handles.  That way the cords can fit through the handle on the back side and no one will ever know you have your cords stashed in the basket.  The cords go through the handle and out the cut out in the back of the desk.

It’s a great, simple solution to a major office annoyance, don’t you think?  Am I the only one that is annoyed by cords?

  1. I think we are related. Lol

  2. I have similar issues with desk cords and this seems like a good idea. I also have a lot of cords and surge suppressors on the floor in my sewing room where the machines and lamps are plugged in. I would need to leave these baskets sitting on the floor. It would probably look better than a nest of tangeled cords and would be easier to lift when cleaning the floor. What do you think of that idea?…………….

  3. Love this! I HATE cords and this is a perfect solution for my home office.

  4. Perfect solution for my cord problem! Thanks so much 🙂

  5. This is a genius idea! I would have never thought about it!

  6. A good idea for others, will not work for me. The cord arrangement on my machines is all spread out, between surge protector, CPU, and printer. And all those cords are always plugged in.

  7. Great idea! It has never crossed my mind to put the leads into a basket, makes the office a more safe place too.

  8. Love this idea, I wish there was a picture of the whole desk so I could see how the basket looks with everything else

  9. Only problem with this idea is the modem and router shouldn’t be that close together… it causes your wifi to fail 🙁

  10. Deb Meyer says:

You can also use those little square bread closure thingies to keep your cords together while plugged in.

  11. Is any one afraid that putting words routers and modems in a box or basket coul catch on fire ? I love this idea !!! And want to do it bc as of now all my cords and routers look aweful !! Or am I just paranoid about the fire lol ?

    • There is plenty of air circulating so I am not concerned, but you’ll need to make that decision for yourself 😉 I only store the modem and the router and they don’t touch or get warm.
